BUILDING A 'RUMAH KAYU' HOME

We have been looking at this home coming into its reality and neutrality for months. After a labor of love no less than five months, the old timber home saved from extinction and discard is back in its true identity. My architect's wife full attention to details to the particulars inherent in such Malay wooden homes of yesteryear have certainly put character and distinction in our new home. We await for its completion added with landscaping and the odds plants and shrubs normally found around Malay homes of the 1940's decade. The half century or more wooden pillars, rafters etc remained intact and make up part of the distinctions of the home. Added to that the motifs and free-flowing air around the home added comfort and warmth.

Wood carving motifs from the old house was replicated

The carpenter at work giving his attention at fixing the windows

Seen here the veranda as part of the old home and the staircase looking towards the padi fields across the road.

A touch of modernity with sand finish pastering added to the pillars and the ground flooring

The ground floor with glass windows all round, yet to be fixed.

The question ! What will it become? A house, a shophouse
a holiday home or a homestay. All is possible

Looking for an old treasure like this? You will help to preserve our heritage. Please don't delay while there are some still standing and waiting for saviors to come their way. It's a great pity if they just diisappear

Sdr Mat Isa,

Uncle,

Bet it would be such a lovely house once it ready.

It reminds me of my grandparents home, it has been renovated sampai dah tak nampak rupanya yg asal.Ohhh how i miss the raindrop on the rooftop, it was like a lullaby.....

cantik sangat rumah ini. kalau saudara berminat nak daftarkan sebagai homestay, saya boleh bantu untuk uruskan dengan Majlis Tindakan Pelancongan Negeri. Lagipun saya attach dengan Kementerian Pelancongan.

Happy to help.

Desert Rose,

Good to see you visiting. Surely soon we will miss the feel of wooden floors and staircases. Esp the children. You must come back more often to the kampong less the old home loses its appeal.
Welcome to visit us

Pak Non

Passion and close attention to details did just the trick. Well done.

Glass windows all around on the ground floor?? Doesn't that 'dilute' the authenticity? But understandable if you want to add air-cond :D

Queen,

You are correct on both account. Come and see on yr next visit.

Been visiting Kota Star for quite some times, but first time dropping a comment. That lovely house caught my attention the first time I saw it while driving from Alor Star to Kubang Pasu a few months ago. Infact I made a stop to take a closer look. It is always my dream to own a house like that one day.

It will be a fantastic traditional Malay house. Is it a KEDAH house? Can't wait to see it.

Salam again Pak Non,
My dad's house was built by your father in law in the 70s, when he was still a carpenter. Having an architect & a carpenter in the family surely make this an efficient project. Heard from my mom that Pak Chat was not well. My doa that he get well soon, Insyaallah.
